In
honor of Jacqueline Brown’s many years of distinguished service to the Medieval
Academy, President Emerita Caroline Bynum has made a generous contribution with
the hope that it would challenge others who have come to know Dr. Brown over
the years to honor her through similar expressions of generosity. A substantial
list of distinguished MAA members, former and current members of the editorial
boards of Speculum, executive directors, and other friends have
contributed over $20,000 to this fund.
These
donations have now established a fund to help offset the costs of obtaining
images and image rights for articles that have been accepted for publication in
Speculum and that make use of visual resources not ordinarily available
from the author’s own archives or under Fair Use, free Commons agreements, or
from institutional archives and image repositories. Funds will be applied at
the discretion of the Executive Director and Editor of Speculum, most
especially for scholars whose institutions do not provide funding to subvent
the publication of visual resources, with no individual subvention to exceed
$500.
For those authors whose articles have been
accepted by Speculum for forthcoming
publication and who wish to request a subvention under the Jacqueline Brown
Fund, please write to the Executive Director/Editor of Speculum, indicating the images to be used and hosting institution
of the art work for which you will need to pay for images or image rights.
Please also include a statement of your attempt to obtain these under the stipulations
set forth in the paragraph above. Funding will be made available as quickly as
possible in all applicable cases in order to expedite publication of the
article in Speculum in a timely
manner.
