Winner of the John Nicholas Brown Prize

2018 John Nicholas Brown Prize

The 2018 John Nicholas Brown Prize has been awarded to Dimitri Korobeinikov for his monograph, Byzantium and the Turks in the Thirteenth Century (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2014).

In a study one reviewer called a ‘scintillating display of erudition,’ Byzantium and the Turks provides us with a rich treatment of Byzantine engagement with its many neighbors in the period stretching from the Fourth Crusade’s conquest of Constantinople in 1204, to the Turkish conquest of Byzantine Anatolia in 1304.  Working directly from the widest range of Greek, Persian, Arabic, Turkish, and Armenian sources, the author provides an unprecedented and detailed account of the dynamic interactions between the Nicean state and its eastern neighbors: the Seljuk Sultanate of Rūm, the Mongols, and the Turks. Korobeinikov’s treatment of this crucial period in the history of Byzantium and its border regions is a feat of historical reconstruction and narration, built partly from disparate sources summoned out of deep obscurity, partly from new ways of reading well-known chronicles and rhetorical works.

Of the many impressive entrees submitted for the 2018 John Nicholas Brown Prize, Byzantium and the Turks stood out as a major reinterpretation of a crucial historical period, distinguished by the quality of its writing, the depth and ingenuity of its analyses, and its author’s remarkable mastery of languages and sources.
